-- It’s was a great night of racing on April 11th at the Myrtle Beach speedway. For the second week of the 2009 season the speedway once again had an exciting field of the southeast’s best late models, limited late models, mini-stocks, and street stocks take to the track. The night started out with qualifying for the late models, where three time track champion Rick Smith clocked in at 20.852 93.12 mph, followed by the qualifying races for all four divisions that were on hand.
The first feature of the night was one of two 50 lap late model races, and once again pole sitter Rick Smith stole the show for a second week in a row. Smith led wire to wire of the 50 lap shootout with only a small test coming from the 1 of Brent Brinson. The second Late Model race of the night once again had Brinson and Smith in a battle for the lead midway through the race along with the 02 of Justin Milliken. However Brent Brinson never looked back after taking the lead on lap 26 also winning his second feature in the last two weeks of the 2009 season.
This seemed to be a common occurrence for the 2009 racing season, as each winner last week picked up another victory this weekend. The Limited Late Models had the 08 of Jonathan Lewis take the 25 lap feature for his second in a row of the 2009 season. Lewis made a great pass on the defending champion Randall Roberts on lap 19 and never looked back. The Street Stock class had Tommy Poole take his second straight win in two weeks as he led all 10 laps in the caution free event. The night cap and eventful race of the night showed the Mini-Stocks take for the track for a 20 lap showdown. There was controversy about half way through after the 19 of Eric McKinnon and the 48 of Terry Smith made contact.
This resulted in Smith’s car unable to finish the 11 remaining circuits of the 0.538 mile race track. Another incident occurred just 7 laps later on lap 16 when the 18 of Michael McKinnon and the 22 of Mark Evans made contact sending the 22 hard into the backstretch wall. Evans was unable to continue while the 18 of McKinnon was black flagged. Despite the controversy the 99 of Ronnie Campbell made it also his second win in two weeks at the speedway leading all 20 laps virtually untested.
